4 Steps to Create A Simple File List in WordPress

First off, you’ll need to install a couple of plugins. You can see them in the screenshot below.

  1. CatFolders Document Gallery – it’s completely free and allows you to publish a list of WordPress files that are categorized by CatFolders. Plus, it works seamlessly with the Gutenberg page builder.
  1. CatFolders – WP Media Folders. This one is available in both free and pro versions and helps you organize your WordPress media files by categorizing them into folders.

2. Start organizing documents into folders

Once you activate CatFolders – WP Media Folders, it creates a new sidebar in your media library which makes organizing your documents super easy.

You can start by clicking on “New Folder” to create a new one, give it a unique name, and voila! You have a new category to keep your documents organized.

I am using the “Documents” folder to host my document library for this quick tutorial, but you can create as many folders as you need. Once your folder is ready, simply drag and drop your files to place them where they belong. And just like that, you have 13 items categorized as documents.

3. Create a WordPress File List from Media Folders

All you have to do is create a new page or post and edit it using Gutenberg. Once you’ve activated CatFolders Document Gallery, you’ll find the CatFolders Document Gallery block in the Gutenberg page editor. It’s pre-built with some really nice elements.

Find CatFolders Document Gallery block

In the block options sidebar, you’ll see a select box where you can choose the folders whose files you want to display.

Simply select the document folder from your folder tree list. You can also choose multiple folders by holding down Shift/Ctrl/Command, just like when you select multiple files on your computer.
